Continuing my journey, I am here today for documenting my second observation day in an ECA 2 class. Yesterday's lesson main objective was using and practising new verbs to talk about weekends. In general, the lesson was very interesting, well planed, simple and comprehensible.
A time line was used as leading to the lesson to introduce days of the week. Students have been asked which day is today? They answered Monday. Tomorrow? They answered Tuesday. Yesterday? They answered Sunday. Thus, helped the students identify the words (النهاردة، بكرة، وامبارح)
النهاردة يوم ايه؟
النهاردة يوم الاتنين
وبكرة يوم ايه؟
بكرة يوم التلات
وامبارح؟
امبارح الحد
After being introduced to the days of the week, they have been asked about the weekends? In Egypt, Fridays and Saturdays are vacation. Do you work on Friday/Saturday in Egypt? Or do you go to school on Sunday in your country? This shed the light on the word vacation (أجازة).
يوم الجمعة! في شغل ولا مفيش شغل؟
مفيش شغل
مفيش شغل = أجازة
يوم الجمعة والسبت في مصر أجازة
These were all baby steps that led to the question, " What do you do on Fridays/Saturdays/ your vacation day? An intro to encounter the verbs used to talk about their vacation.
بتعملوا ايه في الأجازة؟
بتعمل ايه يوم الجمعة/السبت؟
The verbs introduced are classified into two categories, verbs used in case you stay at home on your vacation: (بيقعد، بيطبخ، بيغسل، بينضف، بيكتب، بيقرا، بيذاكر، بيتفرج), and verbs used with outside activities: (بيخرج، بيشتري، بيمشي، بيجري، بيلعب، بيدرس، بيرقص، بيقابل، بيسمع). All of these verbs were introduced in simple and short sentences with the pronoun (HE) (هو).
أحمد/ هو بيقعد في البيت يوم الجمعة، بيطبخ أكل مصري، بيحضر الأكل، بينضف البيت، ويغسل المواعين. بيكتب الواجب، وبيذاكر العربي وبيتفرج على التليفزيون
يوم السبت هو بيخرج من البيت، بيشتري طلبات من السوق، بيخرج مع صحابه، بيمشي في الشارع، بيجري في النادي، بيلعب تنس، بيرقص في الديسكو، وبيسمع مزيكا
All the verbs introduced were supported by visual aids to convey the meaning of the verb. Drilling and practising were always there all the time to help student produce the targeted language. The activity used then, asked the students to form a sentence on each picture, then asking and answering questions about them within their group in turn.
Problems found in pronunciation of (ع) in (مواعين) and in connected speech in the phrase (من السوق). Choral and individual drilling helped in solving this issue. Another method of correcting errors used is: giving them the choice between the wrong and the right articulation (بنقول من السوق ولا مسوق) using finger coding to illustrate being said like one word.
At the end of the lesson, the students were able to use the verbs in the targeted context and form short sentences to talk about how he/she spends the weekends.
In the next post I will be reporting about today's class, until then have a good day!
